History
The Scharnhorst was commissioned into the Kriegsmarine in 1939 as the lead ship of her class, alongside her sister ship Gneisenau. Armed with nine 28cm guns and known for her speed and striking power, she took part in several major naval operations early in the war. Scharnhorst gained notoriety for commerce raiding missions in the Atlantic and for her role in the 1940 Norwegian campaign. In 1942, she and Gneisenau carried out the famous “Channel Dash,” sailing through the English Channel under heavy fire. Ultimately, Scharnhorst met her end in December 1943 during the Battle of the North Cape, where she was sunk by British naval forces. Her story remains a key chapter in naval warfare history, reflecting both the ambitions and limitations of Germany’s surface fleet during WWII.
