History
The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II first flew in 1972 and was purpose-built for close air support, featuring a rugged airframe, heavy armour, and the powerful GAU-8 Avenger 30mm cannon. More than 700 were produced between 1973 and 1982, and the type has since proven itself in combat from Desert Storm to Afghanistan and Iraq. The modernised A-10C variant incorporates advanced avionics, precision targeting systems, and upgraded survivability features, ensuring its continued frontline role despite ongoing debates about its retirement and replacement by the F-35. The 75th Fighter Squadron “Flying Tigers,” based at Moody AFB, and the 25th FS “Assam Draggins,” based at Osan, South Korea, remain key operators of the A-10C, demonstrating its unmatched ability to support ground forces in modern conflicts.
