History:
The Grumman F4F Wildcat was the US Navy’s primary carrier fighter at the outbreak of the Pacific War. The F4F-4 variant introduced folding wings, allowing more aircraft to be stored aboard carriers, and carried six .50 calibre machine guns for improved firepower. Though slower and less manoeuvrable than the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the Wildcat’s rugged construction, self-sealing fuel tanks, and effective tactics enabled it to hold its own in crucial battles such as Coral Sea and Midway. The Wildcat remained in front-line service until 1943 and continued to operate from smaller escort carriers throughout the war.
