History:
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most distinctive fighters of World War II, featuring twin booms and a central nacelle for the cockpit and armament. Entering service in the early 1940s, the P-38 saw widespread use in both European and Pacific theatres. The P-38J introduced improved engines and cooling systems, while the “Droopsnoot” variant replaced the nose guns with a glazed bombardier station for precision strikes. The P-38L became the most produced version, and the F-5E was a specialised reconnaissance aircraft. Known for its long range, heavy firepower, and adaptability, the Lightning earned a formidable reputation as both a fighter and bomber escort.
