History
The Douglas SB2U Vindicator was the US Navy’s first monoplane dive bomber, entering service in the late 1930s. By the time of the Battle of Midway in June 1942, the SB2U-3 was already outdated compared to newer aircraft like the SBD Dauntless, yet it was still in frontline service. Marine Corps squadrons operating from Midway Atoll flew Vindicators against the Japanese fleet during the battle, sustaining heavy losses but demonstrating remarkable bravery. Though overshadowed by later dive bombers, the SB2U’s contribution at Midway highlights the determination and sacrifice of its crews in one of the most decisive engagements of WWII. Today, the Vindicator is remembered as a transitional design that bridged the gap between biplanes and the more advanced aircraft of the war.
