History:
The Yakovlev Yak-1 was a revolutionary Soviet fighter, entering service in 1940 and quickly proving itself as a formidable opponent to the Luftwaffe. Light, fast, and highly manoeuvrable, it formed the foundation of the Yak fighter family that would dominate Soviet air forces throughout the war. The Yak-1 played a critical role in the Battle of Stalingrad, where Soviet pilots used its agility to counter German fighters and protect ground troops. Notably, it became the mount of Lydia Litvjak, who would become the world’s first female fighter ace. Despite being outnumbered, Yak-1 units contributed significantly to Soviet air defence and offensive operations, cementing the aircraft’s reputation as one of the most iconic fighters of the Eastern Front.
