History
The F-86D Sabre Dog was developed as an all weather interceptor during the early years of the Cold War, designed to defend against high altitude bomber threats. Unlike earlier Sabres, the D variant was armed with unguided rockets housed in a retractable tray, reflecting a shift toward radar guided interception rather than traditional dogfighting.
The aircraft was widely exported to allied nations, including Japan, where it formed an important part of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s early jet era. In Japanese service, the Sabre Dog represented a significant step in rebuilding national air defence capabilities, bridging the gap between post war reconstruction and the introduction of more advanced supersonic interceptors.
