History
The Mitsubishi F-2 was developed in the 1990s as an advanced multirole fighter for the Japan Air Self Defense Force. While based on the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the aircraft incorporates a larger composite wing, advanced radar systems and specialised Japanese avionics.
The F-2 is capable of carrying a wide range of modern weapons including the ASM series of anti ship missiles designed to defend Japan’s maritime approaches. Aircraft assigned to the Air Development and Test Wing at Gifu Air Base are used to test new systems, weapons and upgrades before they enter wider operational service.
