Kitty Hawk Models Plastic Model Kit
SAAB JAS-39B / D Gripen (1/48)
The JAS-39 Gripen was developed as a lightweight, highly capable multirole fighter designed to operate efficiently from dispersed bases and short runways. The twin-seat JAS-39B and JAS-39D variants were introduced for training, conversion and operational support, while retaining full combat capability.
This 1/48 scale kit from Kitty Hawk Models represents the two-seat Gripen with finely recessed panel lines, a detailed tandem cockpit and accurately proportioned airframe. Modern sensors, stores and undercarriage details are well rendered, capturing the clean but purposeful look of Sweden’s frontline fighter.

History
The JAS-39 Gripen programme emerged during the late Cold War as Sweden sought a modern aircraft capable of replacing several older types with a single, flexible platform. The designation JAS reflects its intended roles, fighter, attack and reconnaissance, all combined into one compact airframe.
The two-seat B and D variants entered service to support pilot training and operational conversion, while also being used in frontline roles when required. Over time, the Gripen has been adopted by several air forces worldwide, valued for its low operating costs, advanced avionics and adaptability. Though smaller than many of its contemporaries, the Gripen has proven that modern air combat effectiveness is not solely about size or brute force, but about balance, efficiency and smart design.
