Meng Plastic Model Kit
British Tortoise A39 Assault Tank (1/35)
This Meng 1/35 scale kit builds a highly detailed model of the British A39 Tortoise, one of the most imposing assault tanks ever developed. The real vehicle was a massive, heavily armoured design intended to break through fortified positions late in the Second World War. Although only prototypes were completed, the Tortoise’s distinctive shape and sheer presence make it a compelling subject for modellers.
The kit features sharply moulded armour plates, cast textures and structural weld seams that give the hull and superstructure a convincing finish. The large 32-pounder gun is well represented with a solid breech section and clean barrel moulding. Meng’s engineering also captures the heavy-duty bogie suspension system and detailed running gear, making the lower hull a strong visual element once assembled.
The model provides plenty of surface area for subtle painting and weathering, and its broad, angular profile makes it an eye-catching display piece. Despite its size, the assembly process is straightforward, with thoughtful part breakdown and precise moulding throughout.

History
The British A39 Tortoise was developed during the closing years of the Second World War as a breakthrough assault tank. Its purpose was to tackle hardened defensive positions with thick armour and a powerful 32-pounder gun capable of defeating bunkers and enemy armour. The tank’s heavy protection and firepower came at the cost of mobility, giving it a role closer to that of a self-propelled gun than a traditional tank.
Only six prototypes were completed before the project was cancelled in the post-war period, as changing tactical needs and advances in armoured design made such heavy vehicles less practical. Even so, the A39 Tortoise remains a remarkable engineering effort and an enduring favourite among enthusiasts for its size, character and historical significance.
