History
The T-55 was introduced by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s as a development of the earlier T-54, and it became one of the most widely produced tanks in history. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, the T-55 was facing modern Western armour, prompting extensive upgrades. The T-55AM-1 variant included enhanced composite armour, a laser rangefinder, stabilised fire control, and protection against chemical and nuclear threats. These improvements kept the tank relevant through the Cold War era, with many serving in Warsaw Pact armies and exported worldwide. Its robust design and continuous upgrades made it a reliable platform that influenced armoured warfare strategies well into the late 20th century.
