The FRAG 5 upgrade package was developed to further improve crew survivability against improvised explosive devices and small arms fire, building on earlier up-armoured HMMWV designs. Additional armour protection and reinforced areas made these vehicles a common sight in convoy escort and urban patrol roles. When combined with the GPK turret, the M1114 FRAG 5 became one of the most recognisable U.S. military vehicles of the later stages of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
