The AN/TWQ-1 Avenger entered service in the late 1980s as a mobile, short-range air defence system designed to counter low-flying aircraft and helicopters. During Operation Desert Storm, early Avenger units were deployed to safeguard key assets and formations, marking the system’s first combat deployment and establishing its place in modern U.S. air defence doctrine.
