The AN/TWQ-1 Avenger entered service in the late 1980s as a mobile, short-range air defence system designed to counter low-flying aircraft and helicopters. Mounted on the highly mobile HMMWV chassis and armed with Stinger missiles, the Avenger provided flexible protection for ground forces. During Operation Desert Storm, early Avenger units were deployed to safeguard key assets and formations, marking the system’s first combat deployment and establishing its place in modern U.S. air defence doctrine.
