This 1/48 scale plastic model kit from Hasegawa represents the Macchi C.202 Folgore, one of the most respected Italian fighters of WWII. Designed by Mario Castoldi, the C.202 was developed to improve upon the earlier C.200 Saetta by fitting a more powerful liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz DB601 engine.

The result was a sleek and agile aircraft with significantly improved speed and performance. This kit captures the elegant lines of the Folgore, including its streamlined fuselage and refined wing profile. With 70 parts, it offers a straightforward build while maintaining accurate proportions and finely engraved surface detail. Once assembled, the model measures approximately 185mm in length with a wingspan of 221mm.

History

The C.202 Folgore, meaning “Lightning,” entered service in 1941 and quickly proved itself superior to many earlier Italian designs. By adopting the German DB601 inline engine, the aircraft achieved improved speed, climb rate, and high-altitude performance.

Operating in the Mediterranean and North African theatres, the C.202 earned respect from both Allied and Axis pilots for its handling and combat capability. It remains one of the most successful and recognisable Italian fighters of WWII.
