Kitty Hawk Models Plastic Model Kit
RF-5E Tigereye (1/32)
Large-scale kit representing the RF-5E Tigereye, the dedicated reconnaissance variant of the F-5 family. Designed for tactical photo-reconnaissance, the RF-5E replaced the nose-mounted gun system with a camera suite, giving it a very distinct profile compared to its fighter counterparts.
Kitty Hawk Models delivers this aircraft in 1/32 scale with finely recessed panel lines, a detailed cockpit, and a correctly shaped reconnaissance nose section. Clear parts allow the camera bays to be displayed convincingly, and the overall surface detail captures the lightweight, functional nature of the Tigereye well.
- 1/32 scale plastic model kit
- Accurately modelled RF-5E reconnaissance nose

History
The RF-5E Tigereye was developed during the Cold War as a lightweight, fast tactical reconnaissance aircraft based on the Northrop F-5E Tiger II. Unlike larger and more complex recon platforms, the RF-5E focused on speed, simplicity, and reliability, making it especially attractive to air forces operating in challenging climates or with limited infrastructure.
Entering service in the late 1970s, the RF-5E was operated by several nations, including Taiwan, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Its camera-equipped nose allowed it to conduct low-level and medium-altitude reconnaissance missions, often in contested airspace, relying on its agility and small visual signature for survivability. Though eventually replaced by more modern sensors and unmanned systems, the RF-5E remains a fascinating example of Cold War reconnaissance thinking, compact, specialised, and quietly effective.
